Woodlawn Christian Cooperative
Thanksgiving 2012 was the first of many organized food distribution opportunities at Woodlawn United Methodist Church. 25 boxes of food were given away for a Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey. What a joy to work together as the body of Christ!
As small United Methodist Churches, Woodlawn, Wilee's Chapel, Hopewell, Central Chapel and Mt. Pleasant were not able to carry out a mission that would benefit a large community where there is need. But by joining together, we have been able to do more than any one church could do alone.
In 2013 we gave away 411 boxes which supported 1117 individuals.
In 2014 we gave away 434 boxes which supported 1157 individuals.
In 2015 we gave away 661 boxes which supported 1666 individuals.
In 2016 we gave away 669 boxes which supported 1711 individuals.
Woodlawn Christian Cooperative has not missed one month of providing food since its inception in November 2012. When a small fire at Woodlawn UMC temporarily closed the church for repairs, another church opened their doors. Woodlawn Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church opened not just the doors but their hearts to this ministry of feeding the poor.
St. Paul AME church in Oakwood has joined us in 2015 and we have been able to expand our mission to nearly 60 food boxes each month.
We are joined in the spirit of Christ to serve and love our neighbors as He would have us do. Every person who provides food, brings boxes, greets people, prays, handles paperwork, and receives the boxes is a blessing to this ministry.
"In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in¦whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. Matthew 25: 35-40
When we answer the call to serve the poor in the name of Jesus we give honor to God.
